Why Did My Obi Start Working With Google Voice Again

  1. How do I set up Obi200 if I need to transfer my Google Voice # to new gmail?

I am hoping that someone can help me. Years ago I purchased an Obi200 and paid to port my home number into Google Voice. I have now set up a new gmail account due to someone else using my email address. I know that I can transfer my Google voice number to the new gmail account. How does changing the email address associated with the Google Voice number affect the Obi200? I don't remember how I associated the device with my google voice account, since that happened a long time ago. In Google Voice settings, the Obi device is currently associated with my Google Voice account.

Also, I do know that the Obi200 is end of life, and that it may not work starting in December 2023. I would like to continue using the Obi200 for as long as possible, so I don't want to mess this up.

Can anyone walk me through what needs to be done? I can transfer the google voice number to another gmail account, which I already created. I just don't know what I need to do next if I do that. I don't want to start the transfer process unless I know how to finish it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  2. It's been many years since I set mine up, too, but I think obitalk.com is where you do it.

  3. Likely a bit tricky. I'd wager that either HoFo-ers taoman or GPz1100 would have some good advice.

But regarding your Gmail account issue, what's wrong with simply changing the password to block the invader out (unless they've already done that to you)? To change anything like an existing GV number from one account to another, it seems like you'd have to have access to the old (original) one just to prove ownership of the GV number. But maybe the invader has "soiled" the email part of things...

  4. I tried to use the Gmail address that is associated with my Google Voice account to register at Credit Karma. I received a message that it was already in use, so I tried the password recovery option in case I actually registered it before but forgot. The system assumed that I was Lori and wanted me to login to that account via partial Social Security Number and birthdate. Anyway, since I am not Lori and since I don't know how many other places my email was used, I thought it was safer to move my Google voice number and Obi200 to a different Gmail account.

  5. So you do or do not have access to the original gmail account the number is currently registered with?

I have access to the original Gmail account that the Google Voice number is registered with. I also have access to the obitalk account.

I am not sure how my Gmail account became associated with someone else's Credit Karma account online. Since I don't know what else this person associated my email account with and since Credit Karma wouldn't reassign that Gmail address to my account even though I can send/receive messages from it, I have decided to change my Gmail address.

I do know how to transfer a Google Voice number to a different Gmail account. I just don't know what I need to do to get the obi200 to work with the new Gmail account once the Google Voice number is moved there. I assume that I would have to unassociate the obi200 with the old Gmail account and remove the obi200 as a device from Google Voice first and then reassociate them after I moved the Google Voice number to the new Gmail account. I am not sure of the order that these things need to be done or the procedure to do them, however.

  7. Additional information: When I log into obitalk, there is an option to edit profile, which allows users to change the login email address. There is also an option on the device configuration screen to replace Google Account credentials. Right now, if someone calls my home phone (the Google Voice number), it rings on a cordless phone by my router. It also rings on my cell phone, which is typically more convenient for me to answer. That is the part that I am worried about messing up, since I don't know how that part is set up.

That part has nothing to do with the Obi200.

All you'll need to do is log into the new Google account on your GV app to receive calls to your GV #, after it's been moved to the new Google account.

Ringing your cellphone with the GV app or by GV forwarding to the native cell number has noting to do with the Obi. That is just a setting in the GV app or account. You might have to reconfig if you change the GV number/Gmail address.

I have no idea what is required to change the Obi for a new GV number/Gmail address. Worst case would be that you have to configure the Obi from scratch.

As far as GV working on the Obi long term: Polycom does not seem to be interested in continuing the Obi products or keeping up with GV changes. However, the Obi is a fully functional SIP gateway that you can use with other providers, like Callcentric, but they are not free. Some are inexpensive for light use.

When Obi/GV has the last outage after some change that GV made I started using my smartphone with GV Wifi calling and a Bluetooth headset. That works pretty well. I will miss using the the Obi with my cordless phones, but it's been a good long run.

  10. I would be royally irked if someone had indeed hijacked any email account of mine. I would check out this article (https://www.techrepublic.com/article...oogle-account/) for some common methods of determining what may have happened there, if there indeed is a problem with that Google account.

But you say you still have access to it, which means they haven't changed the password to something YOU don't know. I would want to turn the tables on them while it's still possible, and change it to something THEY don't know. Regardless of whether the email address has been used at one or more vendors (such as Credit Karma) by some unauthorized person (keeping them from allowing you to ID with it as a username or whatever), once you get control of the email account for certain, you can (if desired) dispute this with whomever, and ultimately to prove whose account it is would be a matter of them sending you a security PIN that you'd read back or input in a message back to them to show you received it via that account.

I suspect there's more to this than we're hearing, so for whatever the reason, proceed as you have a tolerance for.

Regarding the future of the Obi device, since it is a fully functional SIP device that could get service through any number of other providers, at that time you (anyone) could have a random phone number for it, and simply forward calls from your GV number to it. This is probably what I'll do at some point, as I like making and taking calls while at home using (what I consider) real phones (corded or cordless).

  11. To the OP; who is this someone that has access/using your gmail account? An ex, spouse, someone else?

It's unusual for someone not authorized to have access to an account to not change login credentials immediately.

As indicated above you need to transfer the number to the new google account first.
On the obi side, just delete it from the obitalk portal then readd to the same sp slot using the different gmail account. This will provision the device to reflect credentials of the new account.

I do not know the person who registered my email with Credit Karma. I only know that her name is Lori.

I tried contacting Credit Karma to try to remove that email from her account and reassign it to my account. At first, they just asked me to contact them from that email account, which I did to prove that it was mine. Then they wanted me to upload multiple documents to verify my identity against my credit report. I didn't feel comfortable uploading everything that they requested and none of what they requested would verify that I owned the email account anyway. Therefore, I decided it was easier to create and use a new email account.

I will try to do the switchover to the new account today. I will report back when done.

  13. I posted an update but I don't know what happened to it, so I will try again.

I successfully transferred my obi200 and my Google Voice number to a different Gmail account.

    Here is what I did:

    1. I logged into my Google Voice account and I deleted all devices, including my obi200, from the account. I also stopped call forwarding and turned off other settings.

    2. I transferred my Google Voice number to the new Gmail address using the Transfer button. This didn't work until I accepted the terms and conditions for the new Gmail account.

    3. I logged into my obitalk account and changed my login email to the new email address. I also changed my password.

    4. I logged into the obitalk account with my new credentials and entered the configuration screen for my obi device by clicking on the gear icon.

    5. I clicked on the link to replace Google Account credentials. I entered my new Gmail account here.

I tested everything and it works.

Thanks to everyone who replied for your help. I really appreciate it!

  14. I did the same procedure as kre1997 explained above on both phones in a Obihai 202 and it worked for me. Only I didn't delete devices in the old GV account before transferring. And the transfer to the new gmail account happened instantly.

Also, in the new GV account the Obi showed as a device after doing the Obitalk account changes.

I did not change my Obitalk login info as it was using a totally unrelated email for user.
